Assessment policies

Version 2.0 | 15/10/2020

Assessment information policy

We ensure all student assessment information, evidence and data is:

  • maintained in secure physical and electronic systems
  • only accessible by staff with appropriate roles
  • held in private, in accordance with our privacy policy
  • reported to relevant state and national authorities, as per our privacy policy.

Assessment decisions policy

Our assessment decisions are (unless specifically stated as otherwise) competency-based. Assessment decisions are:

  • made on a student’s capability to apply or use a set of related knowledge, skills, and attitudes at the time of assessment against a set of performance criteria (or standards)
  • based on the evidence the student provides at the time of assessment.
  • criterion-referenced – i.e. against the performance criteria in the standards only (assessments are not normalised between students or student cohorts).

Assessment results policy

Competency-based assessments are reported as either:

  • COMPETENT where a student has fully met the requirements of an assessment; OR
  • NOT-YET-COMPETENT where a student has not fully met the requirements of an assessment.

Assessment results are not provided as grades, percentages, bands or pass/fail.

CASA examination results are an exception to this policy and reported in accordance with CASA policy and procedures.

Assessment feedback policy

Assessors provide detailed feedback to students in written or verbal form. A student who is dissatisfied with the degree of feedback provided may request further feedback from the assessor.

Assessment integrity policy

Students are required, as per the Student Code of Conduct, to ensure their assessment is:

  • their own original work
  • not produced in-whole or in-part by collusion with other students (unless an assessment task specifically allows group work)
  • not copied in-whole or in-part from another person’s work – including current and former students
  • does not plagiarise the work of another person (reasonable quotations with references are allowed)
  • in exams – not assisted by materials not allowed during exams.

Students must not:

  • attempt to unduly influence the assessment decision of an assessor, or to gain favour with an assessor
  • give our staff or assessors any gifts (other than negligible expressions of appreciation after a course), favours, remuneration, or other benefits.

Breaches of this policy are serious and can lead to cancellation of a student enrolment.

Reasonable adjustments in assessments policy

We make reasonable adjustments to the learning environment to cater for students who may have special needs, disabilities or have specific language, literacy and numeracy needs. We:

  • ensure course activities are sufficiently flexible
  • provide additional support to learners where necessary
  • where a learner cannot participate, offer a reasonable substitute within the context of the overall course.

Reasonable adjustments are specifically limited in our environment by:

  • physical access and physical space within our training aircraft and simulators
  • CASA medical requirements for licences, ratings and endorsement
  • CASA requirements for student theory examinations.

Applicants must disclose condition/s which may require reasonable adjustment/s during the stages of application and pre-enrolment. We are not obligated to make reasonable adjustments for conditions which are not reasonably disclosed by a student prior to course commencement.

See assessment procedures for further information.

Re-assessment policy

A student who has not successfully attained a specific assessment is given reasonable opportunity for re-assessment – subject to conditions and limitations. See assessment procedures for further information.

Assessment appeals policy

A student who is dissatisfied with the conduct of an assessment may use our assessment appeals procedure.

Regulatory compliance policy

Our assessment policies and procedures comply with:

  • Vocational Education and Training (VET):
  • Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA):
    • CASA Part 61 Manual of Standards
    • CASA Part 142 Flight Training Organisations.

Assessor qualifications and currency policy

Assessments in nationally recognised VET courses are conducted by staff who meet the assessor requirements specified in the relevant nationally endorsed training package. Assessments are conducted in accordance with all relevant commonwealth and state legislative and regulatory requirements.

Assessments of CASA licences, ratings and endorsements are conducted by flight instructors with current flight instructor/testing endorsements appropriate to the licence, rating or endorsement assessed.

Eash assessor undertakes professional development in training and assessment each year; and maintains currency and competency in the topics they assess.

Our instructors, trainers, and assessors undertake regular moderation of assessment and reviews of assessment practice – to support ongoing quality improvement of our assessment services.

Assessor professional conduct policy

Our assessors must comply with all relevant regulations and policies relevant to their role. Assessor professional conduct ensures our assessments are valid, fair, reliable, flexible, and free of bias. Assessor professional conduct further means each assessor:

  • treats all students in a consistent professional manner
  • does not exercise positive or negative bias toward any individual student, or student cohort
  • only assesses student performance and evidence against relevant standards
  • maintains appropriate separation between their professional role as an assessor and their relationship and conduct with student/s in the educational environment, and outside the educational environment
  • identifies and manages any conflicts of interest with students – in cooperation with their supervisor / managers
  • will not accept gifts (other than negligible expressions of appreciation after a course), favours, remuneration, or benefits of any type from students, their associates or family.
