Language, literacy & numeracy testing for overseas students

Version 1.1 | 11/07/2017

This information applies to overseas students on a Student Visa.

Unless a student’s first language is English, or their secondary school education was conducted in English, students will need to demonstrate that they have achieved a minimum score of 5.5 in an International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or equivalent. This requirement is necessary for students to be able to apply for a student visa. For more information, see https://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Stud/More/Student-Visa-English-Language-Requirements

Students who do not meet the above requirement will need to enrol in an English course, and then sit the IELTS or equivalent English test.

General English language proficiency for the issue of aviation licences

Students enrolling in courses that include the attainment of aviation licences must also demonstrate their proficiency in general English prior to the issue of a licence. This assessment will be undertaken during the interview as part of the selection process.
